• A:Answer If she's already got a cell phone with AT&T, I think you can just put the sim card into the new phone. It doesn't have to use a prepaid plan. I will advise you though that I will use cellular data unless you switch it off on the phone. It's got preinstalled apps like Maps and YouTube that you can't remove or disable. The volume control was also problematic for my elderly grandfather. Took multiple attempts by his caregivers and much frustration before he learned to hold it a different way so as not to turn down the volume.

Q: QuestionThe display remains illuminated when phone is closed. How do you turn off to help conserve battery life?

• A:Answer The user manual doesn't indicate any way to shut off the main screen display. The only display that should remain on when the phone is closed is the small display on the outside of the phone that shows the time & date. And it should only stay on for about 5-10 seconds after closing the phone. The main screen display should go off as soon as the phone is flipped closed and it should immediately come on again when the phone is opened. The User Manual does show an adjustment for how long the main display stays on (Screen Timeout) while the phone is open. That adjustment is located in Settings under Personalization, Display, Screen Timeout.

• A:Answer Locked to AT&T for 6 months - other owners have reported that it can be moved after that period (and after having phone unlocked). AT&T Prepaid rates were competitive enough that we bought a pair of the SmartFlips for folks, even with the 6 month lock.

Q: QuestionI want a phone that can text and call, play music & take pictures. It would be nice if it had an alarm and a game. This is for my 15 yr. old who I don't want to have internet access. What functions does it have?

• A:Answer The AT&T Alcatel Smartflip 4052R can do the things you listed. It can take pictures and record videos, it can text and send MMS messages with pictures, it can do email (I have my Gmail on the phone). It can do email by WiFi to save mobile data. It has a music player but you have to download or transfer music files to use it. It has an FM radio but it needs a wired headset with a 3.5mm plug to get reception as an antenna. It has a basic mobile browser. There are a lot of games available on the KaiOS store on the phone. You can browse the store via WiFi to pick apps you like, then download them. There are quite a few little apps on the KaiOS store. I'm not into games so I can't recommend which ones might be best but I'm sure you can find something you'll like. They're probably basic. You can add a memory expansion microSD card to store music or pictures, probably up to 32gb.
