Yes, it is removable. It actually comes disassembled, so you don't have to put it on in the first place. I took mine off when my new monitor wouldn't fit on top of it.

Please try again later.Yes, in fact the stand (and all other parts that are not the tabletop itself) have to be added when you put the desk together (simple assembly required). My son has not attached the monitor stand since his monitor has an adjustable base, but is considering attaching it because underneath would make space for his laptop.
