The unit plugs in to a USB-C (or Thunderbolt) port on the laptop. It has an HDMI port which can be directly connected to a monitor and two USB-A data ports. With this unit plugged in to my Dell XPS-13 laptop, I can connect an external monitor to the HDMI and use the USB-A data ports for a wireless mouse dongle and a USB keyboard. I fold the laptop shut and it is the same as having a single-monitor desktop setup. There are also cables or adapters available to convert HDMI (or even USB-A) to other types of video connector.
