- Answer Well... not "in place" of the ethernet cable, you would use this adapter WITH a ethernet cable. This is the adapter you would need, if your laptop (or other device) only has USB-C ports, and no ethernet port.

QuestionI know what the USB-C to Ethernet adapter is but, I don’t know what the third port is next to the Ethernet port. What is the third port for? What’s the benefit, I’ve seen the same symbol with the solid line and dashed line on my Apple TV.

- Answer No, For 5G you would need a wireless network adapter if you wanted to connect to the 5G WiFi in your house. This specific device would connect you straight to your router or switch and no wireless technology of any kind would be needed. If your talking at 5G cellular... it's not for that either. Also, for this specific one, if you don't have 5G WiFi on your laptop you don't have a usb c port, I can almost guarantee that, so this would not be something you would want to buy either.
