• I followed the instructions that stated to run a few cycles with the toaster empty. There was a slight smell. But after 3 empty cycles, the smell is completely gone.

• I did not notice any strong chemical odor when I first used the Bella toaster. I have used it every morning since the purchase and have noticed nothing of that type. I only have to turn knob to almost 5 to get the darker toast that I like and smell only the bread. Hope that helps.
