“If the stud used to mount is off centered, does this mount allow movement to the right or does it need to remain centered where it was installed in the wall? Centered to the mount, that is. Is there a few inches of movement right/left or only forward?”

You will need two studs but they don't have to be centered where you want the TV. Mine were not and the hinged brackets provided enough lateral movement of the mount to compensate for the off center.
