It has a direct drive motor that makes the brush roller spin. Personally I have owned both models of the Bissell crosswave, and I feel that the cordless does not clean as well as the corded version. The cordless is MUCH quieter, but if I had to choose based off of how welll the machine cleans, I would choose the corded model.
