Yes it will. I used it to clean up cat vomit and you can clean out the inside of machine after by sucking up water from sink or pail just like instructions note.

You don’t want large piles of nasty stuff being sucked up in the hand held parts or tubes or waste water tank. You might end up w a situation where it would take you more time cleaning the device than the original mess on the rug.

It has enough suction power to take up little chunks that may be left behind. Just make sure to clean the little red mesh screen on the machine under the tank when you empty it.
