It's a filter - the lack of a disposal/grinder is one of the reasons the machine is so whisper-quiet (and it really does live up to the hype in that respect). The dishwasher filter system is designed to filter 100% of the water entering the spray arms to provide a continuous supply of clean water to remove food soils from your dishware.
