The use of the water softener is optional. Our benchmark came with a test strip to measure the hardness and if the water was soft enough Bosch recommended you didn't use it. The Benchmark is super quiet and cleans amazingly well.I put a pot lid with heavily charred residue in as a test and it came out spotless. The drawbacks are the controls are a little fussy and if you open it for more than a few seconds during the cycle you have to press the start button again. It doesn't do a great job drying plastics due to it's energy saving design but I have learned to live with it and would buy another.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. We have whole system water softener as well and so do not use this capability in the machine. The machine works very well and is very quiet, in fact barely audible most of the time (one of the main reasons we got this one). It replaced the previous machine (older version of the same model), that lasted for 11 years of fairly heavy use and did its job very well. Although the old one was very quiet, the new model is perceptibly quieter. Cannot compare with other Bosch models, but this one is officially rated as the quietest.

It is not recommended to use more than one water softener system at a time as it may make your water too soft. If you are unsure of which appliance you may be interested in after reviewing their spec sheets and product pages, we would invite you to work with your local dealer directly to help find the unit that is right for you and your home.
