You would not need to in my opinion, but it depends what you want the listening experience to be. The Bose 5 has adjustable bass, which is decent but not movie theater booming by any means. We use ours for watching tv and movies without a subwoofer.

Please try again later.Purchased this sound-bar, and very disappointed that I don't seem to have enough bass or quality, I would like to think I could hook up a subwoofer but have not found any information on whether it will work or not so may select another system and place this Sound bar in a 2nd guest room or use for just Iphone or computer play back of songs. Absolutely needs a subwoofer and yes i'm using the BASS enhanced button, seriously bad.
