Thanks for reaching out. It is correct that for a direct connection, you would use a 3.5mm male to male audio cable. It would connect to your iPhone via the headphone jack as opposed to the Lightning connection.

I have a 6S+ that I link to the my Soundtouch 30 Series III via Bluetooth. It allows me to play iTunes, Amazon music, etc right from the phone. NO cables needed. The artist and song info are displayed on the 30's display. You can control volume and track changing with your phone OR using the Bose remote. Both worked fine for me.

First I use the Bose app on my iPhone, I also connect the phone and Soundtouch 20 with Bluetooth. When others come who want to play music I plug the iPhone into the Soundtouch 20'with the 3.5 mm cable it goes in the phone earbud 3.5mm jack
