I would not worry about heat below the oven. Grills are at the top and most the heat rises up from there. I haven't noticed any significant heating below the oven.

It can never hurt to but the oven on a piece of heat shield that you can buy online. It is the kind that is put on the inside of the hood on a car. Or a 1/2 inch piece of wood will work too! Either will work because it will not hurt at all to put a protective barrier under the oven! But be sure that the top and sides are clear because those are the more critical areas that you should be careful of!

The longest baking project was at 350 degrees for 80 minutes. I am very satisfied with my Breville Smart Oven in all respects.
