• Monochrome (meaning black and white) only. an't put a color cartridge in it (well, you could refill a black toner cartridge with a single color ink, but then you would get a page printed in that one color).

• You are correct. There are most certainly specific toner cartridges for this printer. They print in multiple shades of black. This is why it's called a monochrome printer.
