When the printer "answers' an incoming call it listens for a fax tone. If it "hears' the tone it automatically goes into fax receive mode. If it doesn't hear the fax tone it "passes" the incoming call to the outgoing jack on the printer that is connected to your phone/answering machine and the caller can leave a message.

Otherwise it will pass the call to the house phone. I didn't like the printer ringing every time a call came in, so I have a splitter from the main phone line and I only connect the printer to the splitter when I want to send or receive a fax. But I don't fax more than once a year.
