• The paper drawer has to remain slightly open if you need to use legal paper. The part is a cover for the open part of the drawer.

• If you were to use legal size paper (8 1/2 x 17") paper in the tray, you would need to extend the paper tray. Now you could see some of the paper because they tray is extended beyond the front of the printer. This cover sits on top of the paper tray if you used the longer paper to cover that. You will probably never use this, but it's there if you do.
