Just so you know, I actually called Canon Customer Support today (11/27/2018) with this question because I was having the same question/concern. Canon said this - "The printers are exactly the same. We simply used the SAME printer with different numbers. If you purchase either one, they are identical. There is no difference between them whatsoever." Now...WHY Canon did this? I have no idea.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Frankly, there might not be any difference. My printer has the logo for MX492, however, when I had it all set up I noticed that on my phone it appears as MX490. This leads me to think that there may be not very much of a difference.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. In my one of the class, my professor mentioned about same product manufactured for walmart and others have different assembley line to make product sold at walmart cheaper as per menufacturer's contract with walmart. That might be the reason why there are two different numbers, as same product they menufacture for different retailer. I saw mx490 at walmart and mx492 at office depot. So I am assuming mx490 is the specific assembley line production for walmart and mx492 for regular one. Just my thought, based on similar case from my class, may ot may not true.
Sorry, there was a problem.
