This link https://ugp01.c-ij.com/ij/webmanual/Manual/All/TR8500%20series/EN/UG/ug_in_06_c.html says: Why does the printer have two black ink tanks? There are two kinds of black ink in the printer: dye ink (BK) and pigment ink (PGBK). The dye ink is used mainly for printing photos, illustration, etc., and the pigment ink is used for text-based documents. Each has different purposes so that even if one runs out, another will not be used instead. If either of them runs out, the ink tank replacement is required. These two inks are automatically used depending on the type of printing paper or the settings of the printer driver. You cannot change the usage of these inks yourself. WARNING: do not continue printing with a dry ink cartridge. You will probably damage the print head and need to replace your printer. If you really must continue, as a temporary measure until you can replace the dry cartridge, use the "Printing Preferences" dialog, on the "Page Setup" tab, use the "Print Options...", to select the "Print With:" options - "All colors (Default)", "All Except PGBK (Black)" or "Only PGBK (Black)" to avoid using the cartridge that is low or dry.
