A:Answer Although not recommended by Canon, I've been using aftermarket ink from our local ink re-fill shop and buying from Amazon. So far, so good. Did the same with our other Canon printer without any problems.
WARNING: if the printer says an ink cartridge is low, pause printing and then replace the cartridge(s). You can soon damage your print head if you continue to "print" with an empty cartridge (overheats!). If you don't have a replacement cartridge, you can select to print with only the Big black cartridge, or print with all the smaller cartridges. Use you application's "Printing preferences", "Page Setup" tab, "Print Options..." button, "Print With:" drop down box, select "All Except PGBK (Black)" or "Only PGBK (Black)". Remember to change this back to "All Colors (Default)" after you put in new cartridges.
