This is a base game. You can play this variation of Catan without any other game boards. Though I will say, this is a little more involved and different than the original Settlers of Catan board game. I can only describe it as 2 board games merged together (Catan and a train game). It's ok but I wouldn't have bought it if I had known that beforehand. I thought it was a straight variation of Settlers of Catan but based on a new map.
