There is a button you can press on the microphone to mute it. And a scroll wheel on the headphones to change the volume. The microphone can be taken off completely as well. I love these headphones.

It has a very reassuring quality actuation 'click' and simultaneously reacts via visual feedback you can see in your peripheral vision (and others can see to queue off of to not talk to you while live/unmuted) on the tip of the microphone by turning Green when unmuted, or Red when muted. You can also configure it so that when unmuted, the light turns off instead. For what its worth; this is the best headset microphone setup I have ever had including that extremely handy mute function, not to mention this mic is studio quality sound at 24bit 44100 Hz. Very much recommend these.

The mic has a tiny light near the tip: green (on)/ red(off). It does not swing up/down but it is flexible so you can move/bend it a little to get it into the position you like. Manual volume control on right side of ear.
