It runs to remove the heat from the unit. Then it turns itself off .

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No it does not have to be unplugged, it has a time out feature that shuts it down after some time to cool and no input from controls. The owners manual does say to unplug, however we have just left ours plugged in and it works great. This is one of new favorite kitchen gadgets as all of its functions work very well, toasting, airfrying, baking, everything, just a great appliance!
