Hi Anonymous. I experienced the same problem the first time I tried to make grilled cheese while suing the Griddler in its "press" set up. Regular sandwich bread is not sturdy enough to hold up to the weight of the top half of the Griddler. If you want to make a panini type sandwich, Betty Crocker recommends a crustier bread like focaccia, ciabatta or a whole grain baguette. If you are making a simple grilled cheese sandwich, use the latch on the hinge to lay the Griddler flat. In that configuration I can have eight grilled cheese sandwiches cooking at the same time for my family. Fair warning, though; the sandwiches cooking on the bottom half will cook faster than those on the lid half. Good luck!
