7.1 means that the audio card can decode a 7.1 audio signal from your movies and games. 7.1 means you have three speakers in front of you. A left, center and right. One to your left and right, ( your surrounds) and two behind you ( your back surrounds) and an independent subwoofer for the lows. So 7 surround speakers and the .1 stands for the sub. This setup creates an image of sound where the jets fly over you in Top Gun, and you can hear bullets whizz past your head in Fortnight. This does require the purchase of a compatible surround speaker setup. Hope this helps.

The sound card that is built into the motherboard does support 7.1 surround sound, however, it is mainly used for the virtual 7.1 surround sound on gaming headsets. The 7.1 virtual surround sound support is mainly used for gaming, which will allow you to hear the direction of footsteps clearly.
