No, it is not a TRUE quad core. It is a dual core with 2 logical threads making it look and act like a quad core. However, it is a fast processor, but it is not much faster than the I5 dual core with 2 logical threads. (I5-6200u) So, I would not spend your money just for the "I7". A TRUE quad core is the I7-6700hq which has 4 True cores and 4 threads making it seem like an 8-core. Here is an easy comparison from PassMark: I7-6700hq performace = 7980, I7-6500u = 4332, and I5-6200u = 3905. Thus, you can see the difference between a TRUE quad core versus a fake quad core (I7-6500u) and the difference between the dual core I7 and dual core I5. (4332 vs. 3905) Your old computer will most likely have a CPU performance between 500 and 2000 in the PassMark bench-marking software.
