What does 7.2 mean? null

7 channels (front right, front left, center, side right, side left, rear right, rear left), and 2 subwoofer pre-amp outs.

7.2 means a receiver is capable of powering 7 main speakers (including surround), and has 2 subwoofers outputs. Not sure why there are so many varying and complicated answers to such a simple question.

It refers to number of speakers: 7= left front, right front, center, left side surround, right side surround (these are the 5 in a 5.1 or 5.2 config) left rear surround, right rear surround are the other 2 (some configs have 1 rear surround, known as 6.1) .2 (or .1)= number of subwoofers; 2 are needed only for very large rooms
