Studs can be either 16" or 24" inches and the buildings do not necessarily have to be "old" to have 24" spacing between the studs. I live in a brand new apartment complex and the studs are spaced 24" inches apart. Needless to say, it is very annoying to try and find a wall mount suitable.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Both. 16 on center 2x4 construction 24 on center 2x6 construction. Thicker wall = more insulation The real question is why don't wall mounts list wall stud fitment. Most stores sell mounts for only 16inch spacing.

Older buildings, before my time, beyond my experience, I understand studs were placed further apart, but what that exact spacing is or was, I don't know. One fellow posted inquiring as to anyone with knowledge experience that might help him regarding his wall studs placed at 24 inches apart. (The first I'd ever heard of that wide of spacing, then too I wasn't building houses one hundred and fifty years ago and construction is my second trade.)
