My guess is that you have an early version of Vista. It was plagued with problems - such a yours for example. The "service packs" that came along later as downloads supposedly fixed a lot of this. I had a later version of Vista and had no such problems. I don't know if the Vista "service packs" are still available from Windows. Vista support is not that great anymore since it bombed so badly in the first place.
