I HATE our Dyson and its vacuum hose, it is the most difficult thing I've ever tried to use. We've had this vacuum for three years now, so I'm irritated that their "help" person says it should stretch over time. It doesn't. And the vacuum won't stay standing vertical either, it keeps unclicking and falling over, meaning I have to constantly stand it up again. If I had known three years ago that this vacuum would cause me so many headaches I NEVER would have purchased it, and I will never touch another Dyson product because of it. What stupid engineering! If and when you can get the hose to stretch out even a little bit, then it kinks over where you hold it with your hand. All the suction is then gone and your wand is useless. I just finished using it this morning to vacuum the tile floors of my bathrooms and I had to stop because I'm so frustrated with it. What a joke!

I also have this problem with the wand wanting to retract while in use. 
I have resorted to lifting the entire vacuum to vacuum the stairs. We have tried stretching it, checking for blockages, and time to stretch.

I am currently vacuuming (prior to responding) and having the same issue as you describe. I thought "I" was the only one, which why I decided to stop vacuuming and get on the computer to see IF anyone else had this problem and how to fix it. Unfortunately, I see that I am NOT the only one and that, apparently there is NOT a fix for this, which I find extremely disappointing and frustrating! I try to stretch the hose out by hand to get SOME relief, but typically it just retracts back in again, which in turn makes the entire vacuum fall over.........sometimes on ME!!
Would LOVE to hear directly from Dyson on this issue, as there does not seem to be any type of response from them on this site????

After using this vacuum for the first time, I felt exactly the same! I thought it worked brilliantly on large open areas of flooring but when I was forced to use the wand and attachments, the hose kept kinking and twisting, retracting and the machine would  often fall over. This is my advice:

You need both hands to use the wand. Open out a short length of hose near to the machine - don’t worry if it kinks - and hold it tight with one hand. Don’t let go, and try not to move this hand. Then use your other hand to hold the end of the wand near the attachment and do the cleaning job, ONLY EXTENDING THE SECTION OF HOSE BETWEEN YOUR HANDS! This stops the machine falling over as you tug on the hose, and at the end of the job you shouldn’t have twisted the hose any more, so it retracts neatly.

This doesn’t work so well on stairs if you have to move further away from the machine but hopefully it helps in other situations.

Same problem here, it's an unbelievable design flaw that shocks me and enrages every time I turn this piece of junk on. Couldn't recommend this vacuum less, especially at the price point. The plastic and joints and everything feels so cheap, its shocking. I came here to type this after fighting that hose again trying to vaccuum washroom rugs. Stay away from this thing.

I hate hate hate this very expensive vacuum. I too thought I would bite the bullet and spend the $400 for the supposedly amazing vacuum Dyson claims it to be. WRONG! Like everyone else on here, I agree its great for open hard surface areas. And thats it. So no it's not worth $400 and it's definitely not at all amazing. In fact I have resorted to using my very old and beat up Shark (that I thought I was sick of.) Turns out the Shark is awesome AND it never makes me want to throw it out in the yard. I strongly discourage ever buying a Dyson product and make sure to share my opinion with anyone vacuum shopping. I had considered a Dyson blow dryer but have since decided I wont give this company any more of my money.

I was having the same problems. Really frustrating. Came on here and found out the stiff part of the hose detaches. I didn't know that before. Doing that made it easier to use attachments when needing to be close to the area you are cleaning. I don't know yet how this will impact the whole falling over thing or if you use it enough with the stretching out. My last purple dyson was older and I bought it used and I don't remember having this issue with it. I loved it. Up till now this one has been aggravating.

If you want a gym free workout buy a Dyson Ball Animal Vacuum and try using the wand and extendable hose or just the extendable hose. You’ll be out of breath, red in the face with your blood pressure dangerously high. You certainly will have had a hard workout. However if you’re wanting to clean your house, vacuum in hard to reach places, forget it. 
It is high time Dyson who boast about their superior engineering capabilities fixed this problem. 
I challenge you Dyson but I won’t hold my breath for your success

because of the stiff hose this Vacuum is literally unusable for anything other than pushing around and it's too powerful for most of my throw rugs so I don't use it...I paid $700 for this piece of garbage...wish I had just replaced my cordless V8...my husband literally has to hold the vacuum and the hose for me to use the hard floor tool or the grooming tool...both were why I bought this very expensive machine...2 person job now to vacuum...thanks for making a crappy job even crappier Dyson...very disappointed.

OMG…frustrated and disgusted and thinking I must have missed something in the directions, I went looking for YouTube videos to tell me what on earth I was doing wrong as I try to use the attachments with the hose of my Dyson. Alas, NOTHING. It just sucks (pardon the pun). It is a fight to the finish trying to clean using attachments/hose with this very costly machine. For floors it’s great, but who buys a vacuum just for floors?? No one!! Terrible design and engineering… what the heck?! At least I got a couple of laughs reading some others’ replies.

This is not an answer, but I have the same problem. I have fought this hose for several years now. To vacuum at any height I have to hold the vacuum off the floor in one hand and the unextendable hose in the other. A few minutes ago while holding the hose a bit extended to reach into a corner, it pulled itself out of my hand and hit me in the forehead with the hard plastic end. Now I have a large knot on my forehead. Geeesh!

I just have to say that I am in the same boat as all of you. I go to use the wand and the accordion part of the hose sections up so hard I can’t use that. I was taking the wand apart and noticed it had a bunch of debris down in it. I completely removed the straight part of the wand. I never knew it was in there. It took me a half an hour to get all of the dog hair and fuzz out of there. It now works way easier and is usable. Hallelujah.

I've been searching ... so far in vain ... for a third-party, non-retracting hose that could be attached to our Dyson.  The standard retracting hose is not far from useless.

I have the same problem.  It drives me crazy.  I finally said enough is enough.  When not in use.
I keep the hose stretched out as much as possible. I discontent the hose from the vacuum.  I use a zip tie on each end of the hose.  One on the handle, one on other end of the  hose.  In the garage i have two hooks attached to the wall far enough to keep the hose stretched to the max. This way the hose is NEVER in its collapsed position.   When using the hose does tend to shrink some, but not as much as before.  This problem drove me crazy too long.
Anyway you can keep the hose stretched out to its max when not in use.   The longer time the better.

You are not the only one. I have the Vertex duoclean, and a bunch of attachments, but even with the air vent open the suction is so strong that it pulls HARD on the attached hose, shortening it by suction, and I can’t reach anything I need to clean (for example with the duster attachments). The machine is constantly falling over and banging onto the ground because there’s such tension on the hose with the vacuum on, so I have to keep one hand on the attachment and wrestle the main vacuum to keep it sitting upright on the floor with the other. It’s incredibly irksome. I’ve messaged them on the sharkclean website, mainly asking why they don’t sell a loose hose extender that at least gives us some move-around room without having to wrestle the machine while trying to DUST *delicate* things, but… crickets.

I have to agree with everyone having the hose issue. Five years into this darn machine and I end my cleaning day with bruises on my arm the next day! I have only kept it this long thinking it would get better, and due to the price point. Jokes on me! It also tears up my antique rugs because the suction when upright is so strong.

After seeing all of these same reviews its time to just move on.  I cannot handle being so frustrated from cleaning the house.

I purchased my Dyson in 2009 and the hose has NEVER worked.  It always "pulls back" when trying to use it.  Today I thought I would contact Dyson Customer Care and ask them how to resolve this issue.  They told me my model was no longer in production so they were unable to assist me.  USELESS machine.  I paid $678.00 in 2009 for it.  The machine works on carpets but that is all it is good for.

It would seem that the hose never stays stretched. I’ve purchased my Dyson ball in 2016. I have stretched out the hose and kept it stretched out for hours only to release it and it go right back to the insane unusable thing that it is.  Every year I completely take it apart for cleaning. At that time I look to see if there’s anything new that it can be replaced with but to no avail.

My arm muscles are aching from trying to use the Dyson dust attachment to clean my miniblinds.  You have to have the strength of a gorilla to pull the hose out and up.  You are constantly fighting the hose because it wants to go back to its original position.  I would suggest that the suction is the cause of the problem.  Perhaps a switch directing full power when using it to clean rugs and half power when using it with attachments would help.  Never had this problem with a Hoover.

I can confirm that we would essentially expect the hose to become more flexible with time and use. A few tips we can provide would be attaching your accessories directly to your hose, as this will also help expedite stretching the elasticity of the hose. Dyson vacuums are engineered with versatility in mind and attachments may be used on either the wand or directly on the machine itself for added convenience. Also, when stretching the hose out we would recommend starting by stretching the part of the hose that is nearest to the vacuum first when extending this part to clean your home. We would actually recommend checking to ensure the wand is not obstructed and that the hose is not sucking into itself as the hose is not something we would expect to be an issue during use.
