• You have four choices. Vacuum only, mop only, vac and mop at the same time, or vac than mop (my favorite).

• I use the vacuum only mode all the time and never have used the mopping feature. Just don't need it. So yes you can do each independently or both together. That is one reason why I chose to buy this model. I knew I wasn't going to be mopping.
