Beside the auto-feeder for the scanner, another major difference is the way paper is fed for printing. The 2850 takes paper from "rear top", while the 3850 stores paper in a removable cassette that can be inserted from the front (and has higher capacity). Thus, the 3850 does not need as much space on top and rear as the 2850.
