smooth wall is also enough. we are currently using smooth wall. This projector is very simple for installation, just plug in and put it on top of table near to the wall. that's it. and illumination is enough using in day time too. It changed our living room as small theater. my wife is enjoying youtube everyday with this projector connecting with her mobile phone wirelessly.

We also recommend using an ALR Screen designed for Ultra-Short Throw Projectors. There are elements within the screen that are optimized to display light properly from the projector below.
