The scanner can easily be used by multiple computers, just not at the same time. I regularly unplug the USB cable when not actively using the scanner. The USB cable that comes with the scanner is about 6 feet long. If you want to physically move the scanner, I'd recommend completely unplugging the USB cable every time so that you can slide the lock which holds the scanner internals rigid during transport. Epson was clever in that portion of the design - you cannot physcally plug the USB cable in if the scanner is still locked for transport. As for installing the software on multiple systems, that's a legal question. I installed the CD onto a Windows system. The Epson website has software which will drive the scanner. A way around any licensing with regard to the CD would be to install appropriate software for the other computer from the Epson website. In my case, I do have two machines which have software to drive the scanner. One is a Windows system (installed from the CD). The second system is Ubuntu (Linux). I got the scanning software for Ubuntu (Linux) from the Epson website as well as their directions for installing it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.. Scanners are usually tied to a single system via USB, not used on a network, if that's what you are crossing your fingers for. You can install on Windows OR Apples OS X, but the manual warns: "Epson Scan does not support the UNIX File System (UFS) for Mac OS X. You must install Epson Scan on a disk or in a partition that does not use UFS." At best, I think you have an either/or situation here - no sharing control.
