The scanner creates its own wifi network that you connect to with your phone. Then, the Epson app conects to the scanner wirelessly via that network. When you are finished scanning the document, you turn off the unit and you go back to your regular cellular data to upload the document. I use this in my semi truck to scan documents in exactly thr same way you describe and it works great.

The scanner itself acts as the network access point. You must download the free Epson Smart Panel app to scan. Regards, Mark - The Epson Team.
