• The design allows for both right hand and left hand doors. The bolt is notated with an "up" stamp and the mechanism has a locking knob that has emblems on both sides of the interior panel so that you can twist it either clockwise or counter-clockwise to work the bolt.

• This deadbolt has a calibrate mode that determines which direction the bolt comes out. It takes but a moment to do the calibration.

• My door opens toward the outside (you push it away from you to get out). If I'm understanding you, that would mean that the bolt has to meet the strike plate no matter which side it comes out of, so you would be installing in the direction of your existing bolt and strike plate.
