I had the same issue. It was picking up too much light from the neighborhood and my driveway lightposts which were causing a glare. So I put it to black and white which made the picture better but the spotlight wouldn't come on. Of course spotlight won't come on in black and white mode. Must be in color mode for spotlight to come on. So to offset the neighbor's light and lightposts, I turned on my front porch light for dusk to dawn and increased the time my patio low voltage lights stay on out back. They're working great now. The camera I have on the side of the house is in total darkness and it has worked fine since it was installed.
