As of right now it seems that it has to be plugged in, but you can walk around the room and it stays focused on you. My mom just plugs it in to whatever outlet is closest in whatever room she wants to chat in. Hope that is helpful.

This is what I did to make mines portable at home. I got a very long extention cord, preferbly a heavy duty one. (the portal's cord is kind of short ) After plugging in the Portal into the extention cord, I tied black tape around the the area where I plugged it into the extention cord to keep it from falling out when moving it around. If it becomes unplugged while chatting with someone you lose conncetion to them. With the long extention cord I can take the portable anywhere I want in my apartment as long as it's is in the distance of the extention cord. Want to go further add another extention cord. I have a heavy duty industrial one so mines is pretty long. I can actually take it outside on my balcony. If you really want to get creative and say take it outside of the home, you can get a small generator that has an outlet port on it. If you have a WiFi hotspot on your phone (tethering) you can actually connect the Facebook Portal via WiFi. If you are in your car and have a plug in outlet device, you can do the same thing.

I can move it from room to room fairly easily but have to take the power cord with me and have somewhere to plug into. It would be nice if it had an internal rechargeable battery so it was truly portable wherever you needed/wanted, but if they have one - they’re keeping it well hidden.
