Yes, for some of the features like ECG, you need the premium service. You can still use all the basic functions (step counting, sleep, etc.) without, but even then it might be less user friendly. Once I realized about the ECG locking, I returned before seeing what else premium unlocks.

They are: - sleeping heart rate - restlessness - sleep "animal" (I don't know what this is as it was introduced after my free trial expired) - health metrics over a week old used to be paywalled; now they're available in 1-week increments/1-month/3-month increments Everything else is available without a subscription. Having said that, I would strongly suggest looking at Garmin devices. Garmin's quality control and customer service are both much better than Fitbit's. I've had my Charge 5 since November 2021, and while I'm too cheap to get rid of it while it still works, I can't imagine buying another Fitbit.
