Personally, I don't think you 'need' a smart phone, but the Fitbit app helps you track your progress. My kids have the Flex 2, and if it wasn't for the app, they wouldn't be able to see their daily progress. I think the app provides a tracking option that is handy. If your grandmother had an iPad or some other way to download the Fitbit app, that would probably work just as well.

Please try again later.Some of the other Fitbits come with a USB dongle so you can just use your computer to import the exercise data, but the Flex 2 doesn't come with one and you'll have to have a smart phone along with the app to import the data. Depending on how many days it stores the info locally, you can sync the device weekly, monthly, etc.
