We understand you're having trouble fitting the replacement air filter into the compartment. The square plastic casing you mentioned is designed to hold the carbon filter. You do not need to remove the carbon filter from the casing. To replace the air filter, follow these steps: Turn the cover of the air filter counterclockwise to remove it. Remove the old filter by pressing on the side and pulling the center out. Place the new filter inside the cover with the side marked "FRONT" facing outward. Align the tabs on the filter cover with the hooks inside the refrigerator compartment, then rotate the cover clockwise until it locks in place. Press and hold the "Fresh Air Filter" button on the control panel for three seconds to reset the filter status. You can refer to the full step-by-step instructions and video here: How to Replace the Fresh Air Filter - https://www.lg.com/us/support/help-library/lg-refrigerator-how-to-replace-the-fresh-air-filter--20152285515947 If you need more help, please send us a private message on Social Media @LGUSSupport, and we’d be happy to assist further! —Renzo
