• The "cool" mode keeps my 700 sq. ft. space within a degree of where I have the thermostat set. The "econ" mode cools the space to the setting, then tuns off. Every 15 minutes or so after that, it samples the air for a few seconds. When the room is 5-6 degrees above your setting, it turns on and stays on until the space is back down to your setting. This is the best window A/C unit I've ever had and after 4 hot summers has functioned flawlessly in both its cool and econ settings. If it failed tomorrow, I would buy the exact same model again.

• Yes. The unit turns off when it reaches a certain temperature. It has a thermostat.
