My son dropped his camera in the ocean and was found the next day and worked perfectly fine. So I’d say yes. And yes you can take pics in the water

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Absolutely! I have used it while snorkeling in Hawaii, Mexico, Dominican Republic... I have taken pictures of fish, reefs, turtles, stingrays, people... At times the camera has been underwater for over an hour at a time. No problems! You can also adjust / change settings under water, switch between video and photo mode etc. If taking pictures under water, make sure the camera is set to "underwater" mode (in mode settings). In my experience, the photos will still need to be somewhat edited later for clarity etc, however for the price it sure is a nice enough camera. I bought it solely for underwater photography and it serves the purpose.

It’s water proof/resistant and shock proof/resistant; meaning it can get wet (i.e. rain, spills, etc.) and has a better chance of not breaking if dropped. It’s a nice camera and easy to use ... I just don’t think it’s fit for true underwater use. You may want to look for a GoPro that is truly waterproof or a water resistant model with a waterproof case. FYI - GoPro cameras shoot video and still shots. Hope you find this helpful!
