“Are the software updates free as well as the map updates? Also, do I need to purchase something in order to install the update? According to one reviewer, a software update requiring an SD card is necessary due to insufficient storage for that update.”

We have a garmin that we bought, and it has free lifetime map updates. Please assist with this if you can ?
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I brought it for my husband and he said it takes him the long route. To up date it you would have to use your laptop or a desktop computer. Yes, it’s free as long as you download from a computer. I don’t know about a SD card yet but I think I’ll look into it to make sure.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Software and map updates are both free. All you need for the updates is a WiFi connection. Updates can be performed using the units built in WiFi or via a wired connection to an internet connected computer using the included cable and free software such as Garmin Express. Lastly, I've never had an issue performing updates on any of the GPS's I've owned even those such as my handheld units with a substantial amount of open source maps loaded up. The 55 is a great unit and I've been very happy with its performance.
