Both models have GPS and built-in optical heart rate monitoring. A few of the extra features that the Forerunner 235 has include additional running features (VO2 Max Estimate, Recovery Advisor, Race Predictor, etc), smartwatch functionality (smart notifications, music controls, etc), Connect IQ app store access, and GLONASS for increased GPS accuracy. -OA
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The 235 has a built in optical Heart Rate Monitor, and that is it. So you can spend the extra money to not have to worry about wearing another device, or you can save some money and put it towards a more precise HR monitor to track during your activities.

The reasons to upgrade in my opinion would be the addition of Smart Notifications, music control, VO2 Max Estimate, Recovery Adviser, Race Predictor, and some other running and biking tools. It does also allow you to use GLONASS, which is a Russian version of GPS, and provides a slightly bigger display. So if you are looking to purchase the watch to get better running stats and estimates it would definitely be worth the additional money from the previous model.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There are a number of differences between the 225 and the 235 - both have GPS and wrist heart-rate tracking and log data to Garmin Connect allowing you to see your activities, sleep, tailor exercise routines, etc. The biggest difference to me was the ability to tailor the screens on the 235 by downloading new watch faces and other apps, the 225 does not have this ability.
