The accordion adjusters on either side of the air conditioner take up about two inches when not extended. What I have done in some cases, is not use the adjuster on one side. However, you will need to make sure the air conditioner is against the window frame on the side missing the adjuster, and you cannot block the chassis vents on the sides of the air conditioner. You will also need to seal the side without the adjuster with tape, but I'd advise against duct tape because it will leave ugly adhesive behind when you take it off. Clear packing tape seems to work well and not leave behind a mess.
