Hi Louise - Thanks for considering GE Model GFW148SSMWW! The thickness, density, and overall size of the quilt should be taken in account when deciding whether to wash in a washer. It must fit behind the washer tub gasket and not stuffed into the tub tightly. Since the capacity is 2.4 cu.ft., it is best sized for queen size quilts, sheets, etc. Our full size washers (4.8 cu.ft.- 5.0 cu.ft.) models are best for king size quilts.
