Hello Nancy, thank you for your question. A downdraft installation refers to the venting system that is installed behind the cooktop that vents away smoke and steam from food that you are cooking. This type of ventilation system is not required for the cooktop to operate properly, although we do recommend you have a way to properly vent your cooktop. We hope this helps!
