Q: QuestionMy husband informed me that these cook tops automatically adjust the temp or go off on their own. Is that true??

• A:Answer Hi Roxie - It is normal operation for radiant elements to cycle on and off (glow red and then go dark) during operation. When the radiant unit is turned on HIGH, the unit will cycle on about 75% of the time and off 25% of the time. On MEDIUM settings, the unit will cycle about 50% on and 50% off. On LOW setting, the unit will cycle about 25% on and 75% off. Also, radiant burners can cause extremely high cooktop temperatures if left on for a long period of time, particularly with a non-flat pan. These burners have "temperature limiters" mounted to the bottom of the element. If the burner should get too hot, the limiter will shut the power off to the element until it cools (approximately 880F). The limiter will then reset and the burner can be used again. Q: QuestionIf my cutout is 20.5 by 28.5 then my current cutout is ok as far as 28.5 across but 20.5 is too large for the depth. Can I still make this cooktop work or do I need a larger one and get someone to cut the counter to fit a larger one

• A:Answer Hi Kat- The required Cutout Dimensions are (WxD) (in.) 28-1/2 x 19-5/8. A filler trim kit is available for use if your countertop cutout is larger than the dimension shown, up to 29-13/16" x 20-7/16", to reduce the cutout opening for installation of this cooktop. Q: QuestionI currently have a GE profile radiant cooktop Model JP 343 that is more than 20 years old. The Hot Surface Indicator Light will not go out when the cooktop is off and cooled down. Do I need a new cooktop or is the current one safe to continue using?

• A:Answer My guess is that without the hot light feature working, you could accidentally burn yourself. Likely no other safety issues would be involved. I would check with my repair person just to be sure. While you make one last check you may want to see if the light could be replaced, which would save you lots of money. Also since the appliance is over 20 years old, you may want to replace it and enjoy if for 20+ more years!

Q: QuestionI need to replace my Jenn-Air cooktop. Currently I have a center downdraft because my kitchen has a vaulted ceiling-no way to use an exhaust fan. I cannot find a cooktop with a downdraft! Is that required other than for smells?

We know this may have caused concern. We have manufactured downdraft cooktops in the past, and we can advise we do also have telescopic downdraft systems. These can be installed with most of our gas and electric cooktops; two examples of these systems are model numbers UVB36DKBB and UVB30DKBB. These retractable vents can also be a great look for your kitchen. • A:Answer It's a three wire, it hooked up no problem to my 4-wire system. It works great. Just don't hook up the neutral, just cap it off as it states in the directions. It's comes with a attached 3 wire, black, red, and ground no plug.
