Its actually important for more efficient operation. The condensing side of the unit has a slinger ring that uses the condensate water to cool the hot coils. If there is no water, the unit only uses air, which results in less efficient operation. Meaning, it doesn't cool as much. This means it uses more energy as it has to run longer to get to the target temperature.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. My unit was spraying water into my living room and draining inside as well. I finally read that someone took that plug out and it solved the issue. It was a huge mess I had to soak it up with towels! I removed the plug and problem was solved! This was last yr. Now there is condensation building up inside the vents as well as some black mold (just a little). It’s very humid today so maybe that’s why? Not sure what to do. Not even sure where the plug is now. :(

Air conditioners have a "slinger ring" around the rear fan blade. The fan is designed to pick water up off the bottom of the pan and throw it against the condenser coils. This design feature helps improve the efficiency of the unit by reducing heat on the coils and helps remove some of the condensation and rain water from the pan. Hope you find this helpful. Geoff@GEA
