Yes, you can but the water stops filling when opened. It resumes after a slight pause.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Despite what GE says, no, the lid cannot be open while the washer is filling with water. Even with the “precise fill” option off and selecting a load size manually, the washer will always pause filling if the lid is up. Very annoying if you use powder detergent and want to add it to the washer while the water is running.

Starting in 2015, top-load washers feature a lid lock that engages when the washer is either load-sensing (Precise Fill) before and during fill, or when it is spinning above 50 RPM. It does not lock for the entire cycle. You can open the lid when filling when using manual water level settings Low, Medium, High and Max.
